For example, cautionary accidentals are automatically set according to the document rules.

From what I can tell, Sibelius normally makes pretty good layout decisions automatically. Finale isn't as organized in this regard. Sibelius supports multi-touch and the Microsoft pen, which is potentially a faster way to do note entry. I don't think either part has a big advantage unless you are working on a Microsoft Surface. From what I can tell, copying across a key change does not transpose in Sibelius, which is a big problem. I have only glanced at the copy filter functions in Sibelius, but they don't look as flexible as in Finale. I don't think it supports the drag and drop option like Finale. In the end, it is a question of familiarity and I don't think it changes the results or productivity much.ĬOPYING. Finale still uses the “tool” model that many new users find quite confusing. This is probably more intuitive for a new user. Sibelius uses a ribbon style UI, similar to the newer Office products.

The Presonus products (StudioOne and Notion) do this right out of the box, but Notion is not a full function notation product on the level of Finale or Sibelius. If so, that would make a powerful platform where the notation is done in Sibelius, but fully rendered and processed in the DAW. Some people expect that LoopBE or LoopMIDI will enable this, but I have not tested that yet. There is no direct support for sending MIDI to the DAW. The time sync works, but you can send only a single stereo audio stream, not one stream per staff. Sibelius has supported Review since 2006 (I think). Finale doesn't support this at all, which means there is basically no possibility of real-time integration with any DAW. And Rewire should allow you to send audio or MIDI from one program to the other. When you start the transport in one program, the other program's transport moves exactly the same.

Rewire allows you to connect two programs and have them time-synchronized. So my real desire is to integrate with a DAW product, leading to. The playback setup is a little more flexible, allowing more effects, but neither program is anything like using a DAW. I can use all of my VSTs and VST1s with Sibelius. Finale can't use them at all, which is a real problem. I don't really care what mode the notation program runs in, but I have a lot of 64-bit VSTs and VSTis. With Finale, the default has that information chopped off the left side of the screen.Ħ4-BIT. I like the Sibelius one a little better because the staff labels are always on screen. Sibelius added Panoramic View 3 or 4 releases ago, and it is equivalent to Finale scroll view. This was the original show-stopper for me.

The comparison is Finale 2014 versus Sibelius 8 running on Windows 8.1 This review deals with the things that are most important to me, and is not an attempt to fully describe the products. This s not intended to be comprehensive, and I have spent only about 12 hours on Sibelius, so I am sure I am underestimating that product in some cases.

I know there are other comparisons between Finale and Sibelius, but I thought I would share my observations.

Fortunately, Avid offered a $90 upgrade from ANY prior release, so I took advantage of that. So it sat on the shelf for 15 years.Īs MakeMusic has gone through their process of stretching release cycles and now transplanting the company to Colorado, I felt like I should take a good look at Sibelius. I used it about 2 hours and gave it up because for me, the lack of a scroll view made it impossible to use for big projects. When Sibelius attracted attention, I did buy version 1.2 in 2000. I have used Finale since the mid-1990s (about 20 years) and have probably done about 1000 projects (ranging from simple lead sheets to full symphonic orchestra scores) with it.
